Boston pipe maker, Todd Brugman, is an in-house pipe maker at LJ Peretti Co. Prior to that, Brugman learnt the art and trade of pipe making in a classical way. He spent many years studying and apprenticing at LJ Peretti Co. where he made his professional debut in November 2021. His pipes, both with classic and contemporary attributes, have been a breath of fresh air. The community has noticed, and he’s been working day and night to keep up with the demand!
Here he takes a very traditional English shape, the calabash, and modernizes it while preserving the classic, timeless look. He uses Danish minimalism cues in the shaping of the shank with neo-classical Italian proportions. English shaping cues can be seen on the heel transition and the shape itself.
Brugman has become a master of the cutty shape, and here, he carries over the cant of that shape to make this Leaning Calabash. Brugman pushes the envelope, as he always does, by making a straight calabash (something that is rarely seen) in such a way that it has an elegant and timeless look.
Clearly Brugman is “painting with his own brush.”
