Handcrafted 100% from raw materials in the L.J. Peretti workshop in Boston, this one-of-a-kind pipe is a masterclass in Todd Brugman’s signature “Americana” style. It blends English, Danish, and Italian cues to create a design that is contemporary yet holds a timeless, “anachronistic” aesthetic.
Design & Inspiration
Influenced by industrial designer Raymond Loewy, the shaping features a seamless continuity that balances sharp delineations with organic flow. While technically a “Straight Bulldog,” it incorporates the subtle “Burmester Curve” (French curve) in the shank and stem—a hallmark of Brugman’s recent architectural approach.
The Grain & Materials
The briar dictates the form: perfect straight grain wraps the lower bowl, while tight birds-eye adorns the rim, heel, and shank panels. The sharp geometric contours flow into the bowl with a biomorphic feel, merging the organic with the structural. The stem is hand-cut from limited-edition vulcanite, featuring neutral, organic swirls designed to complement—not overshadow—the stummel.
Engineering & Feel
Precision-engineered for the perfect draw, this pipe is a high-performance instrument.
    • Weight: 40g (Lightweight & perfectly balanced for an easy clench)
    • Chamber: 15/16″” diameter (Comparable to a Dunhill Group 5 or a Castello G) It is a very wide chamber, about as wide as a chamber can get, practicly speaking.
    • Construction: Properly thick walls, Thick heel, drilled perfectly with precision from the bowl through the stem, and a perfectly funneled stem.

Brugman views his pipes as a collaboration with nature, influenced by fine artists from Rembrandt to De Kooning. As he says, a pipe is not a finished work until it is smoked; the owner applies the final “brush stroke.”

Todd Brugman Grading System from Lowest to Highest/Best: T, O, d, dd. There is one grade higher, it is the “ddd” aka “3D” aka “Triple D”, but that, as of the date of this post has only been used for about 1.5 years, and this pipe right here is the 4th pipe to ever get that grading.
Grading is 90% based on the grain, and 10% based on the shaping in regards to difficulty and execution
Pipes are stamped “T Brugman” followed by the grade, on the left side of the shank. With “LJ Peretti Co” stamped on the right side of the shank.
**Note: This pipe is made from Algerian Briar. Algerian Briar was the gold standard for briar up until the early 1960s, especially for sandblasts (It was the only briar Dunhill used for sandblasting in that time period, and the first briar to be sandblasted due to it having a large contrast in grain density, among other attributes. It was known to be the highest quality briar, for any finish, smooth, sandblast, etc. for many factors. In 1962 the French-Algerian war ended and in its wake the vast majority of the places where the briar grew were destroyed. Since, no brand has been able to get large enough quantities of it to use for there pipes. It has been available, just in small quantities. A small amount of artisan pipe maker could purchase 8 to 12 blocks once a year, but the quantities are extremely limited, and it takes 80 or so years for briar to grow (ideally much longer). We happen to have a supply here (yet limited, and dwindling) here that was acquired by Bob Peretti many decades ago.
