This freehand calabash takes a bit of natural inspiration from the plateau bark rim which rises and falls to follow the grain. A truly unique piece! Medium sized, half bent, measuring 6″ by 2 1/4″. Moderately smoked and carefully restored.
In the early 1980s, Danish pipemaker Finn Anderson produced some amazing, one-of-a-kind pipes from the window of a shop in New York City. These freehand Danish pipes epitomized the classic Danish freehand style. Finn told spectators he had worked in the famous W.O. Larsen workshop in Copenhagen, and their influence is apparent in his work.
Not a lot is known about this pipemaker, but we recently came into possession of an estate collection of his work, as well as several other pipes from the Pipeworks shop in New York. Handling these pipes has felt like participating in a golden era of pipemaking history. It’s been an honor to restore and photograph these lovingly smoked briars and present them to the pipe smoking community.
